DAY EXCURSION IN MARRAKECH

ONE-DAY EXCURSION FROM MARRAKECH WITH AN EXPERIENCED GUIDE

Marrakech, a historic imperial city in western Morocco, is an important commercial hub with mosques, palaces, and gardens. The medina is a densely packed, walled medieval city from the Berber Empire with mazelike passageways filled with vibrant souks (marketplaces) selling traditional fabrics, ceramics, and jewelry. Djemaa el-Fna, a large square where storytellers and musicians perform, is lined with food stalls.

Marrakech is very popular with the French, and many French celebrities buy property there. With 18 souks offering everything from traditional Berber carpets to modern consumer gadgets, Marrakech boasts Morocco's largest traditional market (souk). Crafts employ a sizable portion of the people, who largely sell their wares to visitors.

El Badi Palace is located on the eastern side of the Kasbah. It was constructed by Saadian ruler Ahmad al-Mansur following his victory against the Portuguese at the Battle of the Three Kings in 1578. The opulent mansion, which took nearly a quarter-century to complete, was paid for with recompense from Portuguese and African gold and sugar cane earnings.

The Bahia Palace, nestled amid large grounds, was erected in the late nineteenth century by Si Ahmed ben Musa, Grand Vizier of Marrakech (Bou-Ahmed). Bou Ahmed lived here with his four wives, 24 concubines, and a large family.

The Menara gardens are located west of the city, near the Atlas Mountains. Abd al-Mu'min, the Almohad monarch, erected them around 1130. The pavilion with its modest green pyramid top inspired the name menara (menzeh).

The Saadian Tombs were constructed in the 16th century as a tomb to house the ashes of countless Saadian monarchs and performers. It was lost for many years until being recovered by the French in 1917 via aerial pictures. The mausoleum contains the remains of around sixty members of the Saadi Dynasty, which originated in the Draa River valley.
